"Our world’s caves are places of wonder, mystery and majestic beauty. Show caves around the world are embracing their role in protecting and preserving caves and providing a place for people to learn about these special, natural, cultural and historical resources.

Show caves also play another important nature tourism role of sustainable economic development, providing jobs, and helping the economy of their regions.”

Guidelines for Cave and Karst Protection

After the publication of the first edition by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) back in 1997, the second edition of the Guidelines for Cave and Karst Protection to support the growing international need for guidance in cave and karst management has recently been published. The UIS, in cooperation with the IUCN, and thanks to the work of 16 leading experts, have updated and expanded the guidelines to include new knowledge gained over the past 25 years. This is also a recognition of the International Year of Caves and Karst.
