"Our world’s caves are places of wonder, mystery and majestic beauty. Show caves around the world are embracing their role in protecting and preserving caves and providing a place for people to learn about these special, natural, cultural and historical resources.

Show caves also play another important nature tourism role of sustainable economic development, providing jobs, and helping the economy of their regions.”

Description

26th International Karstological School "Classical Karst": Show Caves and Science 18 June, 2018 - 22 June, 2018, Postojna, Slovenia Since 1993, the International Karstological School "Classical Karst" has been organised annually, covering many aspects of karst research. This year we will focus on research related to caves dedicated to tourism (show caves). The main aim is to present and discuss a wide range of speleological issues addressed by different scientific and technical disciplines that are deeply involved in sustainable show cave management (morphology, biology, meteorology, nature conservation...), the monitoring of natural conditions and tourist-related activities in show caves. We believe that there are many good and bad practices of adapting caves for tourism worldwide to discuss and to evaluate the role of science - at least at Classical Karst we have opportunity to share knowledge accumulated in nearly 200 years of using the Postojna Cave System for tourism.
