Cave of the Mounds

Basic info

Cave of the Mounds – National Natural Landmark

Over millions of years ago, deep beneath the ground, the Cave of the Mounds began to form. Water gradually dissolved the rock to create this magical underground world.

Cave of the Mounds was discovered by accident after a routine quarry blast in 1939. In May 1940, Cave of the Mounds was open to the public for tours. Tours take you past a varied collection of colorful stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and other crystal formations. Our guides will delight you with tales of the history, science, and imagery of the various caverns and passageways you walk through. According to the geologists who study our cave, it takes 100 years for cave formations to grow just one centimeter!
